The School of Knitting and Crochet teaches hand knitting and crochet at every level, and specialises in teaching absolute beginners. Sessions are currently  run on a 1-2-1 or small group basis. 

Tutor Rachael Elwell has over have over 8 years professional experience teaching all levels of knitting and crochet to people of all ages. I have previously worked for Manchester's Ministry of Craft and taught in schools, art galleries and museums. Please scroll down the page to read more about Rachael.
 
Through 1-2-1 tuition (tuition for small group bookings are also available) students are able to learn at their own pace and once the basics have been learned, students are able pursue techniques and skills in their own areas of interest and start working on projects from an early stage. A suitable venue can be arranged on booking.  Many students enjoy having lessons in their own home.

    (All fees include hand out, patterns and materials. If you are outside of a 25 mile radius of OL14 (todmorden) additional milage fees may apply. We can discuss this on booking)

Available Beginner courses

LEARN TO KNIT (1-2-1 tuition)
(£55.00 - 6 hours spread over 3 weeks, some practice required between classes, inc. materials) 

This course is designed with the absolute beginner in mind, but it is also perfect for those who are refreshing their skills or have taught them selves the very basics of knitting and need extra tuition to move forward. 
On this course you will learn the necessary skills to start knitting fun and creative patterns, including:

  • Casting on and casting off
  • Knit and purl stitch - and how to use those to make pattern textures
  • Increasing and decreasing your stitches, so you can start to shape your knitting
  • How to make a cable stitch:  get knitting your favourite Aran patterns in no time!
  • knitting with two colours to knit fancy stripes and mosaic patterns
  • How to read a knitting pattern, understanding terminology and a guide to the tools and yarns you'll need beyond the course.

What you'll make: 

  • Lots of samples of knit and purl patterns demonstrating your new knitting skills.
  • Samples demonstrating your new skills in making a cable stitch, increasing and dcreasing 
  • Colour work (stripes) sample

INTERMEDIATE KNITTING (1-2-1 tuition)
(£55.00 - 6 hours spread over 3 weeks, some practice required between classes, inc. materials) 

Have you mastered the basics of knitting? Or maybe you've completed 'Learn to Knit' (Previously called Knit 123) and now you're looking at improving your skills even further at a steady and manageable pace. Intermediate Knitting focuses on those techniques that people find a challenge with knitting, such as knitting in the round, sewing up techniques, and decorative textures such as bobbles and lace. During the classes tutor Rachael will guide you through many new skills you need to get you knitting all those patterns you aspired to make when you started knitting. 

To attend this course you must be able to confidently cast on, cast off, knit, purl and know basic increasing and decreasing techniques. During the three weeks you will learn:

  • How to knit in the round, using 4 needles (it's easier than it sounds)
  • How to knit lace patterns and make bobbles
  • How to make a button hole with a boarder
  • Sewing up techniques
  • Intarsia knitting (colour knitting technique)
  • How to pick up stitches
  • Reading patterns

What you'll make: 

  • Lots of samples of lace, bobbles and colour work patterns demonstrating your new knitting skills.
  • A piece of tubular knitting (now you can get knitting socks!)
  • A neat and skilful sewn up knitting sample complete with button holes (now you can assemble your garments beautifully)

 


LEARN TO CROCHET (1-2-1 tuition)
(£55.00 - 6 hours spread over 3 weeks, some practice required between classes, inc. materials)

Learn to Crochet is a complete beginners course, designed to teach those who have never attempted crochet and want to get their hooks moving, and for those who are refreshing their skills. 
You will learn all the skills you need to get crocheting Granny Squares and flowers in no time. 
The tutor will teach you the following core crochet skills in just 3 weeks:

  • How to confidently hold the yarn and hook (usually a stumbling block for many) and make chain stitches. 
  • How to make double, half treble, and treble crochet stitches
  • How to crochet in rows and in the round
  • How to change colours
  • How to read a crochet pattern, understanding terminology and a guide to the tools and yarns you'll need beyond the course. 

What you'll make:

  • Several samples in which you will have learned double crochet, half treble crochet and treble crochet
  • A traditional granny square
  • A flower motif

INTERMEDIATE CROCHET (1-2-1 tuition)
(£55.00 - 6 hours spread over 3 weeks, some practice required between classes, inc. materials)

Crochet is a fun and creative craft, full of texture, colour work and decorative techniques to get stuck into. Once you have mastered the basics there are plenty of new patterns to have a go at. In this course, the tutor will introduce many new techniques to you that will build up your skill level over 3 weeks - such as 3D crochet work (so you can start crocheting toys!), intarsia crochet and crochet cabling and ribbing. Over the three weeks you will learn:

  • How to crochet with two colours, along the row, to create crochet intarsia designs
  • How to crochet ribs, cables with crocheting 'fount the front and back' of stitches
  • How to create textures with bobble and popcorn stitches
  • How to crochet spheres and other 3D shapes
  • How to sew up your cchet - with the crochet hook!

What you'll make: 

  • Several samples of textures and colour work
  • An advanced granny square pattern
  • A small toy (may require work at home after initial class)

 

LEARN TO KNIT SOCKS (1-2-1 tuition)
(£60.00 - 6 hours spread over 2 weeks, some practice required between classes, inc. materials)

Knitting socks is a learner knitter's dream project. 
It's a knitting project that many aspire to make but may feel intimidated by all the of the different techniques involved and pattern terminology. 
With this 'easy-peasy' sock knitting course, you'll soon be wearing your first pair of hand-knitted socks with pride. 
From learning to cast on using the Long Tail cast on method, through to turning the heel, shaping the toe and learning the Kitchener's Stitch, you'll be able to tackle any sock knititng pattern beyond the course
There will be some required, plain knitting, between the classes. 


Over the two weeks you will learn:

  • Long Tail cast on
  • How to make a ribbed cuff
  • Knitting the heel flap and gusset of a sock
  • Picking up stitches
  • Turning the heel
  • Shaping the toe
  • Casting off in Kitchener's Stitch

What you'll make: 

  • One complete knitted ankle sock (you may start the second one in week 2 if you complete the first sock )
  • Several practice pieces knitted in the round (if you have never knitted in the round before)

Course Requirements

  • You must be able to confidently knit and purl, cast on and cast off. 
  • Some experience of knitting in the round would be a great start, but it is not essential as you will get to practice that before you start the sock pattern if needed.

About the tutor...

With 8 years of professional teaching experience, Rachael has tweaked and perfected her teaching style and course content to provide each student with the best possible, practical learning experience of knitting and crochet. Rachael's teaching style is very relaxed and every session is always a fun, friendly and a creative experience. 
Rachael is also an artist, working with textiles, drawing and printing, so her approaches and project inspiration is always playful and pays great attention to perfecting technical skills.

Other workshop information...

Materials: The fee for your course includes the cost of your materials. All materials will be provided by the tutor. You may bring your own yarns and needles to the classes, but please check with the tutor before you attend that they are appropriate for the course tasks. 

Cancelling a course: If you have booked course or a class and can no longer make it, you should cancel within 24 hours of the arranged date and a full refund will be given if you have paid online, or an alternative date for the next course of your choice will be offered.
Cancelation requests within 24 hours can not result in a refund, but a transfer onto the next course can be made. 

Not happy?: If you are unhappy with your course or class experience every effort will be made to put this right. Please make contact as soon as you can to discuss any issues and the tutor will be happy to help. 

Insurance: The tutor has full Public Liability Insurance for all workshops and 1-2-1 tuition.
